I have a Maltese named Teddy, and when I got him, I decided to go to a vet that had a monthly plan that helps with wellness care and provides you a discount if your pet gets sick or needs medicine. The more I learned, I realized that was not the smartest option for me because if Teddy had to have emergency surgery or got extremely ill, that would put a substantial financial burden on me. I didn’t want to be in a situation where I would be stressed if something happened to him. I will say I got fortunate that Teddy is extremely healthy, and I have had no emergency room visits or any major health issues, but again this is for the “what if” and unforeseen circumstance occurs.
Here are 3 Reasons to get Pet Insurance:
Reason 1 – pet insurance can cover the cost of the medical bills if your pet gets ill or needs medicine or emergency care. We invest in our health insurance, so we should do the same for our pets. Vet bills can add up if your pet gets injured or needs major medical attention. The last thing you will want is to deal with your pet being sick and unable to afford the care for your family member. Our pets are family, so I know how important they are to us.
Reason 2 – It will give you peace of mind if an emergency happens. Having pet insurance will assist you with these major bills. Also, certain breeds are sometimes prone to hereditary conditions. For example, Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers, Great Danes, and German Shepherds are more likely to have hip dysplasia. Treatment for this specific issue can cost between $3,500 – $7,000 to treat.
Reason 3– to get insurance is because if you wait too long and your dog develops an illness, you won’t be covered for this illness in the future because it would be considered a pre-existing condition. So if your dog gets seizures or develops cancer before insurance, you won’t be covered.
Now how do you find a policy? Great question. When I was looking for insurance for Teddy, I asked my friends & family that had pets if they had pet insurance and which insurance company they decided to select. I knew the insurance plan I wanted had to have wellness & emergency care. Not all pet insurance provides wellness insurance. Wellness insurance will help with standard vet bills when you see the vet for vaccines or wellness checks. With that being said, I decided to choose Nationwide Pet Insurance, and so far, I love it. Once I see the vet, I keep my receipt and submit it on their website, and they can mail you a check, or there is a direct deposit option as well. It is so easy and convenient. The other reason I like Nationwide is that they also offer a vet helpline that you can call to ask questions to a vet if you can’t reach yours. I hope this list helps you find the perfect pet insurance and fit your budget. I certainly asked for quotes from all of them, looked at the monthly cost, and considered the deducible too.
